What makes Howard Dean so frugal? Was Ruth Dwyer the teacher's pet in high school? Why does Anthony Pollina's mother describe him as "knudgy"? Vermont Public Television premieres a different kind of election special on Oct. 17 -- a biographical documentary on the three leading candidates for governor, in a year when there is a lively three-way race and the outcome is still uncertain. This documentary will explore the personal backgrounds, philosophies and platforms of incumbent Gov. Howard Dean, a Democrat, and his challengers, Republican Ruth Dwyer and Progressive Anthony Pollina. Producer Catherine Hughes says "Vermont's Choice" is unlike any program produced before on candidates for high office in Vermont. "It's a lot more than just the issues," she says. "We'll give viewers new information about the candidates' families and backgrounds -- about what made them who they are today."
