Freedom & Unity: The Vermont Movie is the first-ever documentary series about Vermont history and culture. The six-part film is a collaboration of over four dozen critically acclaimed Vermont filmmakers, led by award-winning filmmaker Nora Jacobson.
Part One: A Very New Idea
Consider the idea of Vermont, in the 1600s just a glimmer in the eyes of European explorers, but N'dakinna for the Abenaki people. Settlers and proprietors carve up the land, then In 1777, it becomes an independent state, adopts a radical constitution forbidding slavery, requiring public education, and a motto: Freedom & Unity. Vermont’s heroic role in the Civil War, reminds us that despite ongoing struggles with racism, Freedom & Unity continues to chart the course of the state up to the present day.
